In three weeks time, my favourite auction house, Webb's, is holding a vintage clothing collection auction,
The Vinka Lucas Collection. The Vinka Lucas description from Webb's says:
Between the 1960s and the 1980s Vinka Lucas owned and operated a designer salon in Auckland named Marée de Maru and subsequently added the label Vinka Lucas After Five. During an extended period of working overseas she operated under the label Vinka Lucas Paris.
Following a move to smaller premises Webb’s has been asked to auction a collection which has been archived during the past forty years. Some gowns were designed and made for Vinka herself, others represent a selection that Vinka has chosen to retain from each label. Every item in the sale is meticulously constructed and in immaculate order.
Here are some of my favourites:
Lot 46: This is my favourite of the lot. A short, formal cocktail dress.
The bodice in very ornate sequins of black and gold. The skirt in black net with a stiff lining, festooned and frilled hem in gold sequined tulle. $300 – 500.
Lot 70: A very close second. A one sleeve and dropped asymmetrical "bubble"skirt in black flowered net over silver lamé. The neckline is trimmed with Swarovski pink crystal beads. $300 – 500.
Lot 242: A long dress. In black with very bold diagonal stripes. Very fully cut sleeves. Some damage. $80 - 100. This is so affordable! I want it! (Damage pending...)
Lot 336: Such incredible fabric. A long dress. In black with brightly coloured printed and appliqued flowers. Some staining. $60 - 80. If I didn't think I'd look like a prize fool in it, I'd buy it!
Lot 124: I'd be the prettiest bird at the ball! A ballgown. The halter top in black mesh with embroidered silk leaves. The black straight skirt with oversize silk paniers at the hipline. $300 – 500.... Oh, is that all?
Lot 201: I picked this for my partner-in-vintage Elicia, but she wasn't keen. Death to her!
Lot 18: A long evening dress. Of simple sleeveless design in tie-dyed silk velvet. With a matching spectacular long sleeved evening coat. The sleeves and hem of the coat are trimmed with black tipped, red ostrich feathers. $600 - 900.
Lot 212: A long dress that I love and would buy if I didn't look like Muu Muu lady! Black, white and red cotton, fringed sleeves. $100 - 120.
Lot 14: I am such a sucker for bias cut... A long skirt and tunic for cocktail wear.
In blue silk with gold embroidery and sequins. Asymmetrical shoulder with organza petals on the shoulder. Vinka Paris $500 - 700.
Lot 197: What exquisite material! Psychedelic caftan: $80-$120.
Now, the prize for prettiest dress?
Lot 301: Stunning! Expected to go for $180-$250.
And the prize for the most ridiculous, amazing, lovely, IWANTTHISSOBADGIVEITTOME piece?
Lot 344: More like LOL 344. In printed velveteen in green, brown and yellow. $80 - 100.
VELVETEEN. How ridiculous. I must have it I must have it I must have it.
So, I've resolved to head to the viewing and auction, possibly with money that should be saved to spend on my three-week trip around America and to
Rollercon in July. I must say I'm completely stunned that Vinka would want to sell some of these pieces off, but I'm equal parts stunned at the thought of what she's choosing to keep!
Meanwhile, keep an eye out this weekend for my first set of Auntie Peach and Lady Evelle vintage. I'm photographing on Saturday and posting next week - I can't wait to get back into the game and raise some much needed moolah for my America trip.
Yours in Vinka-related drool,
Auntie Peach xx
